May 022013

April Showers are supposed to bring May flowers.
Somehow I don’t think that the May flowers are going to appreciate the snow showers April is insisting on.
Still I have hope.  Change is in the air.
We have a new room – see, isn’t it lovely?  No really, go look.
Geeky happenings are happening all over the place.  Check it out:

Event Horizon Room 107

Date: May 1 to the future as far as we can see
Location: Event Horizon Room 107

For all of you have questioned the wisdom of having the Event Horizon split across the building – wonder no more.  In a spectacular move of pouncing on an opportunity when it presented itself, GPS has traded room 135 for room 107.  Room 107 offers many benefits, the best being right next to room 106.  That means that the WiFi now reaches into our large room.  It is also bigger and easier to find.

PLEASE NOTE: anything that was previously scheduled in room 135 will be in 107 starting May 1.

Board of Directors Election

Date:  May 14, 2013
Time:  6:00 PM
Location: Event Horizon Room 107
Contact: secretary@geekpartnership.org

Elections are coming.  At the Geek Partnership Society’s (GPS) Annual Meeting we will be electing three (3) directors to the Board.  If you would like to vote in the upcoming elections you will need to have volunteered at least 20 hours for GPS organizations before May 1st.

Anyone eligible to vote may also be eligible to run for the board.  Contact secretary@geekpartnership.org for more information or to declare your intent to run.  All declarations must be received by the Secretary by May 1st.

Facilities Division (Incumbent: George Richard): The facilities director is responsible for maintaining our space at Event Horizon. This typically includes light repair work as well as being aware of larger needs that may occur.

Communications Division (Incumbent: Andy Murphy): The communications director handles communication within Geek Partnership Society, as well as ongoing discussions with our partner organizations and promotion of the organization and our events to the community at large.

Clubs Division (Incumbent: Seth Chmelik): The clubs director works with the clubs (such as Geek Physique, Crafty Geek, Geeks Read, etc.), ensuring that club leaders receive assistance and are operating according to Geek Partnership Society’s rules.

Date: April 6, 2013
Time: 2:45 for participants, 5:00 for spectators
Location: Event Horizon Room 135
Cost: $20/team (spectators are free)

Attention Twin Cities Geeks, The GPS Trivia Challenge is right around the corner. Happening a little earlier than usual, we will again be in Event Horizon for the contest. Teams of four will compete to decide who gets the geeky bragging rights this year. Last years winners, team Dolomite, will be seeking a repeat performance. Little do they know that the top two teams from each round will be advancing to the finals this year instead of just the top team.

Contestants:  Get ready!  Get set!  Get your whole team to the Event Horizon no later than 2:45.  The seeding quiz will start promptly at 3:00 and be finished by 3:30.

Not interested in testing your knowledge of obscure facts?  Come and be amazed by what some of your fellow geeks know. The good news for you is that entrance for spectators is free.  There will be snacks available for purchase and perhaps will bring in the bar too.

The reading list for the 2013 Challenge:

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

Feb 202013

Date:  May 24-26
Location: Double Tree Park Place, St. Louis Park
Cost: $40

Brit Con announces that the discounted pre-registration rate of $40 will be extended to April 30, 2013.  This means that if you haven’t registered yet, you can still save $10 over the announced rate increase.  This will carry through to the Group Rate which allows groups of 10 or more to take an addition $5 off.  You don’t even have to be an official group or club to do this, just get nine or more friends to come with you.  See the registration form for details.

Additional guests include: Richard Klemensen, publisher of Little Shoppe of Horrors magazine, the journal of classic British horror films with a particular focus on those from Hammer Studios, and comic book artist Gordon Purcell, who recently pencilled IDW’s Dr. Who/Star Trek TNG crossover mini-series.

And just a reminder:  It’s never too early or too late to volunteer, which includes PROGRAMMING.  We’re working on a great slate of topics, but we can always use more.  You probably know stuff about your favorite British-authored books, TV shows or films that you & your friends are anxious to share!  Tell us all about it at a panel!  For those who wish to work behind the scenes, our convention committee is always welcoming to new participants.  Check out our site to learn more.
